Photography Challenge - Week 3

7th April - 14th April 2020

Photography challenges are a great way to develop your photography skills, learn new techniques and test your creativity. Over the next 12 weeks we’ll be running a series of weekly photography challenges exclusively for members to help you practice your photography. At the end of this week, Karl will review a selection of the submitted images, giving his feedback and general advice.

This week's challenge is...

How to get creative

We thought it only appropriate, given that it’s Easter, that this week’s challenge should be eggs. Whether it’s chocolate eggs or chicken eggs, test your creativity and see what you can create this week. Remember, when shooting still life subjects such as this, lens choice is an important factor, as is the decision on what background and props to use. Think about the composition of your shot, what techniques could you use to guide the viewers eye? Colour is another factor that you could use this week. Experiment with different colour schemes to see what works — would a monochromatic scheme work, or perhaps complimentary colours create more impact. The best thing with still life subjects such as this is that you don’t have to worry about your subject moving or changing form, so make sure to use your time to the fullest.

If you’re looking for ideas or inspiration, below are a few classes that you may find useful.

About the challenge

We’d love for all our members to get involved in our weekly challenges, but to ensure everyone gets maximum benefit from these, there are a few guidelines...

  • Live image reviews will be approximately one-hour long, with Karl reviewing a selection of up to 20 images.
  • Members can submit any one image (taken at any time) for the challenge but due to time restrictions priority will be given to critiquing images taken in the spirit of the challenge during the week. A second image can be uploaded to show this (i.e with your phone in shot with the date showing).
  • All images submitted to our Facebook group will be displayed in a members gallery on Karl Taylor Education as well as shown as part of a slideshow during the live image review.
  • One final photo per person will be accepted.
  • Images should be 2000px on the longest side. Although Facebook compresses images, at this size they should still be good enough quality for Karl to review.
  • Cut off for submissions will be 00:00 BST / 19:00 EDT the Monday before the image review.

All images submitted will feature in a gallery on our website and be shown as part of a slideshow during the live image review, but due to a one-hour time limit priority will be given to critiquing a selection of up to 20 images that were taken during the week of the challenge (a second image can be submitted to show this). A breakdown of these guidelines can also be found on the Facebook group.
