The Challenge Of Working To A Brief

When photographing commercial jobs, working to a brief is standard practice. Generally, photography briefs will outline everything from the lighting, mood and feel to the styling of a shot. Carefully designed to target particular audiences, when receiving a brief it is imperative that you execute it as best as possible.

To help our members practice working to a brief, Karl will be presenting a unique challenge for everyone to try. In this live show he will be providing a clear brief detailing a simple product advertising image — this will reflect what you could expect to receive from any art director. Mood boards, reference images and a written description outlining the concept will be provided for you to refer to and guide you throughout the process.

Members will have until 1st June to submit their images, which Karl will then review in a follow-up live show. Additionally, Karl will also select a winner from the submissions who will receive a Manfrotto 055 Carbon Fibre tripod valued at $500.

This challenge will provide a unique opportunity for members to practice a real-world scenario, but with the benefit of receiving feedback and advice along the way. If you have yet to work to a brief, we recommend watching chapter two of our Business course, ‘Working to a brief’.

Make sure to join us on Tuesday 5th May at 15:00 BST for this exciting live show — and make sure you have a pen and paper! If you miss the show, it will be available on replay for you to watch at your convenience.

The final brief can be viewed here.
