Rachell Smith has always been a creative person and she knew, at the age of just 10 years old, when she lost a camera she’d borrowed from her grandad, that photography was her passion.

The British photographer spent a lot of time with her grandfather, who was a keen amateur photographer, and it was from him that she developed an interest in what was to become her future career.

“I went on a school trip to America when I was about 10 years old and I borrowed my grandad’s really old Pentax 35mm film camera. I lost it on the boat trip back from visiting Alcatraz and I was so upset that I realised I’d inherited my grandad’s love of photography,” Rachell said.

Now an internationally renowned celebrity portrait and fashion photographer, Rachell had always enjoyed art at school and was good at painting, so it was only natural for her to start taking pictures of people and places to paint from. After that, the paintbrush stayed down and the camera became her artistic tool of choice.

After school, Rachell graduated from The London College of Communication before going on to assist some of the world’s biggest photographers, including Rankin. During the three years that she assisted him, Rachell learnt many lessons that served her well when she set out to work for herself.

“My experience with Rankin had an enormous impact on my career and style,” Rachell said.

During her assistant years, Rachell explained that she learnt the valuable skills of organising a photo shoot, how to keep calm and professional under pressure and to always have a plan B for the lighting.

Since then, she has opened her own successful studio in London and her images, which are often described as soft and beautiful, have been featured by leading publications around the world, including Glamour Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure and Vogue.it.

Inspired by personalities, emotion and style, Rachell explained that she was always interested in capturing the moments around her. As a people person, even when pushed for time, she takes a moment to get to know her subjects and connect with them.

“I always try and capture personality or emotion in pictures. I like to approach subjects as I would approach a friend, by making them feel welcome and comfortable.”

“I like to talk to them before we enter the set to get to know them a little and if they’re a little nervous, to calm those nerves and make it fun. It should always be a great experience for everyone on set.”

Most recently, Rachell photographed Coco Rocha in Paris during Fashion Week for Harper’s Bazaar. Despite great time pressures — the team had only an hour and a half to shoot an entire cover story — everyone on set had “a blast”.

“As soon as Coco arrived, the next hour and a half was energetic, fun and mind blowing at how extremely talented and professional Coco is. I just managed to get the last Eurostar back to London by running as they were closing the doors.”

Establishing connections with her subjects is something Rachell still values and, along with the variety, it is one of her favourite parts of the job. Whether it be photographing breast cancer awareness campaigns, magazine covers or celebrity portraits, Rachell always tries to ensure her shoots are a great experience for all involved — something she also learnt as an assistant.

“I get so much joy and passion from collaborating with a team on a shoot. It is the most incredible feeling when we’ve come together with all of our thoughts and ideas and can see the results on set.”
