Understanding Parabolic Lighting Live Show

The magic of parabolic lighting

10th May 2018

During previous live shows one question that always comes up again and again is..

"If you could have just one lighting modifier, what would it be?"

Without hesitation, Karl's answer is always the same - a Para 133.

But what makes this light so special and why do parabolic lights create such a stunning effect?

Join Karl LIVE on May 10 at 18.00 BST / 13.00 EDT as he delves into the world of parabolic lighting and shows you just how versatile they can be.

There's a lot of mystery surrounding the magic of true parabolic lighting, many photographers don't understand how or why these amazing modifiers provide such visually interesting results. In this live shoot Karl will reveal all, as well as demonstrate the uses and benefits of paras and their results compared to other more standard modifiers.

As always, Karl will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, but if you are unable to join us live we're happy to take your questions by e-mail for Karl to answer on air.

We understand that not everyone can be available to watch live, but the replay will be up immediately after the show for you to enjoy.

Parabolic lighting is ideal for fashion and beauty photography due to it's versatility and precision.

    1. Hi Karl. Unfortunately won’t be able to watch the show but I couple of quick questions. For reference I own a para 177 & 2x para 88’s with the broncolor move pack.

      1. How crucial is it to use the ring flash for the para? Sometimes I feel like with the mobi-led head, I am not getting enough coverage and wrap.

      2. How do you decide the amount of focus you want to use with your para’s to match a creative brief?

      3. How would you use multiple para’s for different creative looks?

      4. Can you give some examples of using a large para as a side light.

      5. Examples of creating soft light paras!

      Thank you so much!

      1. Hi Andrew, everyone of these questions is answered in the show which you can now watch on replay in the live shows section. Let me know if there is anything else.

    2. Hello Karl,

‘Cretins’? That’s a bit harsh. Suspect they know loads more than me about photography, which must make me…. Oh.
