Night Photography

Many compact cameras nowadays have a ‘Night mode’ and in this photography class you’ll learn how you can combine it with a fill-in flash to create some beautiful nighttime images.

In the first part of this class you’ll learn how to use features such as ‘Night mode’ and your cameras self timer to get great, sharp images even when it’s really dark.

Karl then switches to manual mode to demonstrate how you can take full creative control in low light conditions. Photographing from a pedestrian bridge, he uses a slow shutter speed to capture a spectacular image of car trails as they speed in and out of the city.

In this photography class we cover the following:

  • How to use your compact camera at night
  • Camera modes: Night mode & manual mode
  • How to avoid camera shake in low light
  • Using your cameras self timer function
  • Flash photography at night
  • How to photograph car trails

  1. How did you avoid overexposing the sky in the Minneapolis freeway shot? Is it just the the sky as it came out was brighter than in reality but still looked acceptable?

    1. Hi, yes we shot at twilight so the sky was already getting dark blue but not black if you know what I mean. So it’s all to do with timing and there is a short window of opportunity where you can get the balance on the two the same. You could also try using a soft graduated ND filter to help reduce the exposure in the same way we do for Landscape long exposure images in our other clasess.
