Fine Dining Food Photography: Preparation

In this series of food photography classes Karl works with food photographer Anna Pustynnikova, shooting everything from beef to tea, to demonstrate essential preparation, styling and lighting techniques for eye-catching food photography.

In this chapter Anna explains how to prepare the duck, potato gratin and mushrooms that will form the subjects of the next chapter.

In this food photography class we cover the following:

  • Food preparation – duck, potato gratin and mushrooms
  • Useful equipment for food photography
  • How best to store food prior to preparation
  • Selecting props for food photography
  • Cooking food to photograph

  1. Hi Karl – I have just signed up today and whilst I was initially excited about the tutorial video courses, I have looked at a few random samples across different genres (I am mostly interested in food and business side), I see most of the comments seem to go back to 2017.
Is there a plan to update the courses? I feel watching these from 4 years ago doesn’t feel too fresh. Whilst a lot of the topics are more or less evergreen content, there are always new techniques and perspectives to be explored – but it feels that once you shot and released the initial batch in 2017, you aren’t developing these areas of your site further.
Keen to hear your thoughts before I fully invest into the platform. Thank you.

    1. Hi John, thank you for signing up. Yes you are right many of the topics are evergreen but our courses are upgraded whenever there is need to. In fact you will find food courses from 2019 and 2020 in there two and amongst our live shows. As a platform we release 2 lives shows and 2 courses per month so we never stop producing and as one of the worlds top providers of photography education we are aware of any changing trends and look to accommodate them, you will even find a course suggestion panel on your home page where we take members ideas on board for future courses. However I would encourage you not to focus solely on the food courses and encourage you to look at the ‘Lighting Theory’ sections first and some of the great tips found in other courses as this will broaden your horizons in a variety of techniques that are applicable across a range of genres. If you have any questions then please leave a comment like you did here under the relevant class. All the best Karl.

  2. This session is awesome!!! Karl I never thought you wouldn’t like to cook!! I love cooking. This is great learning the details for food photography. I’m getting hungry watching it.

    1. Hi Geoff, thank you. I think it’s the getting messy part that I have an issue with as I’m a bit OCD with things being tidy. However after going through this process with Anna I’ve been more interested as it is quite scientific really which I like! 🙂
